Trolling: Covering Water Efficiently

Trolling is the most efficient method for covering water and locating fish in offshore fishing. By moving baits and lures through the water at a controlled speed, you present your offerings to a large area while maintaining baits at specific depths. It is how most offshore fish are caught, particularly tuna, mahi, wahoo, and billfish.

Spread Configuration

A typical offshore trolling spread includes 4-6 lines at different distances from the boat and at different depths. The outrigger lines spread the baits away from the boat's wake. Short lines (within 30 feet of the transom) are for shallow-running lures. Long lines (100-200 feet back) are for deeper baits. Flat lines (on the surface without伞drag) run at intermediate depths.

Speed and Depth

Trolling speed is controlled by throttle position and lure selection. Most offshore trolling is done at 6-10 knots. Faster speeds suit some lures; slower speeds suit others. Diving planes (伞drag) control the depth of artificial lures without requiring in-water devices. The relationship between speed and伞drag depth must be understood to achieve the desired lure depth.
